The Marriage Office Process
Step 1: Book Online
Complete our simple online booking form. Within seconds, you'll have your marriage service booked.
Step 2: Notice of Intended Marriage
We'll help you complete your Notice of Intended Marriage form correctly. This must be done at least one calendar month before your marriage date - but don't worry, we'll guide you through it. Once this has been received we can choose a date to marry.
Step 3: Documentation
Provide your identification documents (passport or birth certificate plus photo ID). If you've been married before, you'll need to show your divorce papers or death certificate. Our celebrant helps with the process.
Step 4: Get Married
Meet us at the agreed time and location with your witnesses (or use our witness service). Sign your marriage documents, and you're legally married! It's that simple.
All Done!
You'll receive your ceremonial marriage certificate on the day. We'll take care of registering your marriage, and your official certificate will be available to order from NSW Births, Deaths and Marriages if you need it.
Legalities
Marriage Requirements

You must be at least 18 years old to get married in New South Wales. If you're 16-17, you'll need both court approval and parental consent before marriage can occur.
You don't need to be an Australian citizen or resident to get married in Byron Bay. Anyone can get married here regardless of nationality, as long as they meet other legal requirements.
Marriage is open to all couples regardless of gender, sexuality, or religious beliefs. You don't need to follow any particular religion or have a religious ceremony.
If you've been married before, you must provide proof that you're free to marry. This means either divorce papers or a death certificate of your previous spouse.
You'll need to provide original ID documents: either a passport, or a birth certificate plus photo ID. Foreign language documents must be officially translated to English.
You cannot get married online or by proxy in New South Wales. Both partners and two witnesses must be physically present at the marriage service.
You must lodge a Notice of Intended Marriage at least one month before your wedding date. This can be done up to 18 months in advance.
Both parties must understand what marriage means and freely consent to the marriage. You must be able to make your own decisions about marriage.
In exceptional circumstances, you can apply to shorten the one-month notice period. Valid reasons include employment commitments, travel arrangements, medical issues, or legal proceedings.
