One Month's Notice
Most couples must give at least one month notice before the marriage can happen.
This is done through the Notice of Intended Marriage.
What the rule means
It is one calendar month, not just 30 days.
The period starts when the completed NOIM is received by the celebrant.
Simple examples
- If we receive your NOIM on 15 March, the earliest normal marriage date is 15 April.
- If we receive your NOIM on 1 July, the earliest normal marriage date is 1 August.
What does not start the notice period
These things do not start the one month notice period:
- filling out the booking form
- paying the fee
- starting NOIM Easy
- talking to us about dates
The notice period starts when the completed notice is actually received.
Can the period be shortened?
Sometimes, yes.
But only in limited circumstances, and only a prescribed authority can approve it.
See Shortening of Time.
Best next step
